Things Are Not Always What They Seem
Turning Struggles into Strength
With the soft glow of a desk lamp illuminated a sea of textbooks and scattered notes I spent hours reviewing example problems. With incredible focus, I would meticulously review each concept, dancing between the lines of dense material and creative problem-solving. As the clock ticked late into the night, I sketched diagrams and scribbled ideas, exhausted and frustrated hoping to finish with enough time to sleep. Each moment of struggle helped me become relentless and uncover what was possible. Every frustration and disappointment helps to connect me to other people who fight the same type of battles I do.At times, it feels as though life is determined to test me. It’s as if several goals are blocked by an invisible wall. But in these moments of struggle and adversity, I’ve come to realize something profound: these experiences, which once seemed like obstacles, are in fact shaping me, defining me, and empowering me in ways I had not anticipated.
I often reflect on the tenacity of David Goggins, whose name has become synonymous with extreme endurance and relentless work ethic. Goggins is famous not just for his physical feats but also for his intellectual perseverance. I have found a connection with him through my academic journey. Many times, during my school years, I would find myself grappling with complex concepts, struggling to grasp deep math and science.I remember countless hours spent re-reading notes, rewriting information, and studying harder than my peers just to achieve the grades I aimed for. It was a rigorous path, but it reminds me now of Goggins' approach to mastering challenges: outworking everyone, whether in fitness or learning. His relentless pursuit of excellence has illustrated that perseverance, despite its grueling nature, often leads to mastery and growth.
Similarly, I resonate with J.K. Rowling, who faced countless rejections before her work was recognized. This summer, I submitted my writing with hopeful anticipation, only to be met with a rejection that stung deeply. Yet, instead of deterring me, it connected me with a community of artists who share in the trials of creative expression. While the immediate outcome was disheartening, it reinforced my connection to a broader narrative of perseverance. Like Rowling, I find comfort and inspiration in the struggle, embracing it as part of my journey. This experience has deepened my love for teaching writing, reflecting on the process, and blogging. Each setback fuels my desire to articulate and reflect, knowing my words will make an impact.
Hearing negative words is ever easy. It’s never easy to hear that someone does not agree with the choices you make. However, considering the numerous people who have made worthy contributions, it is not uncommon for people to not be on your side all the time. For example, Steve Jobs, who faced scrutiny for his ideas ended up doing quite well. Jobs’ story is a reminder that even the most visionary leaders encounter resistance. Through this lens, I see criticism not as a barrier but as a testament to my engagement with clear goals, even when the path is not clear.
In my pursuit of athletic dreams, I’ve found similarities with Olympic hopeful runners. Like several athletes, I have poured my heart and soul into my training, striving for a marathon goal that ended up out of my reach. Watching close friends qualify for the Boston Marathon while feeling excluded from that opportunity was a reminder of my limits. Yet, it is in these moments of apparent failure that I have learned the most. The journey, though it did not culminate as I hoped for, has given me wisdom and connection.
Through all these experiences—academic struggles, creative setbacks, critical feedback, and athletic disappointments— have come to understand that challenges are not mere obstacles but parts of my growth. Positive and negative experiences shape my identity and connect me with others who have faced trials. In the face of adversity, I have discovered my humanity, my strength, and my ability to move forward with purpose. And so, I embrace the struggles and disappointments in life knowing that they are the very things that will empower me.
This is going to be such a great example for your students. Beautifully written and so inspiring!
